Gaythorne Infill Housing
BackThis project explores the way in which 4 dwellings could be achieved through an as-of-right design on adjoining 200sqm and 400sqm allotments (5m and 10m wide respectively). The front studio dwellings (one of which is an existing pre-war cottage) were separated from the main rear dwellings by a landscaped courtyard off which all dwelling are accessed. The device of the courtyard results in a flexible arrangement where the dwellings may be occupied in range of ways of from one large extended family, to all separate households to family with older independent children or live-in carers. This project demonstrates how high density (64d/ha) can be achieved in traditional low-medium residential areas in way that creates an appropriately scaled street front and a climatically responsive building.
